Itinerary
May 15 Parks Creek, 2900 ft., 1/2 mi. SW Edgewood, Siskiyou Co. Calif.
As we are breaking camp today, a general survey of this area, as seen by us since May 9, follows:
The S (upper) end of Shasta Valley, which
we have covered to some extent from our base
camp is largely upper Spruce with tongues
of Incense Cedar and Yellow Pine following
the streams down a short way from the
mountains. Transition apparently begins
here at the extreme S end of the valley,
almost as soon as the level valley floor
ends and the hills start more sharply
upward. Further N and W, there is a
bare area between the valley floor and
the Yellow Pine belt on the hills.
This end of the Shasta Valley, is watered
largely by the Shasta River and its tributary
streams: Parks Creek (on which we are camped)
and Willow Creek which comes down from
the mts. near Gazelle. The W part of the
Valley near Gazelle is flat and dry and
is in some places planted to wheat and
alfalfa. The E side of the valley is apparent
ly better watered, the streams apparently
tending to flow in that direction where they
meander thru flat winding valleys
