May 12 cont'd.
In the afternoon, drove to Gazelle with Johnson. We looked for gopher workings
W of Gazelle, but couldn't find any. It
appeared to be too dry here for them. Shot
6 Horned Larks in the dry fields of grass
or grain. Most of them were shot from fence
posts along the road. This place designated
as: 3 mi. NW Gazelle, 2750 ft., Siskiyou Co., Calif.
We then drove back toward Gazelle on the
main highway and turned off toward the E
about 1 mi. N Gazelle. We found a place
along this road, where there was quite a
patch of very fine sand, drifted up into
low dunes and overgrown with Artemisia
sp. Here we stopped and set 25 gor.-size
mouse traps. This place we called: 3 mi.
NE Gazelle, 2750 ft., Siskiyou Co., Calif. We
Then drove on till we crossed Park Creek.
Here we stopped and looked for gopher
workings but they were rather scarce and
I only made 3 sets. This place we designated
as: Park Creek 2750 ft., 3 mi. NW Edgewood,
