Palmer 1936 January Aug. 9 E.S.E San Benito (contd.) ch'd. on ground in grass weeds or perched in cottonwoods or valley oaks; Green-backed Goldfinches - in small flocks around edges of fields, perched in trees or at water; Brewer Blackbird - in flocks perched in dead oaks flying over downstream (as they seem to do every morning); Meadowlark - flocks of 15 or 20 in alfalfa; Killdeer - Groups (families?) of 4 or 5 along the river; Buzzard - 10 or 12 circling overhead (There is a dead cow nearby); Bewick Wren, 2 in thickets of wild rose; Nuttall Woodpecker, 1 in small Dogger Pine. Hunted down river from 8-9 A.M. Shot 1 Kingfisher as it flew down the creek. Had been perched on a dead limb of an oak. Shot 1 Nuttall Woodpecker in willow by the river. Shot 1 Calf's Jay, Bracon Foxes (can't see but) in a small cottonwood. Birds not seen up the creek this morning were; Say Phoebe in small bushes in the dry river bottom; Lutescent Wackler, 2 in small willows; Dove - several perched in tops of large cottonwoods; Sledner-billed Nuthatch - heard 1 in cottonwoods. Caught a Hammophis seitalis which crawled into the tent at camp.
