Palmer 1936 February bmi: CSE San Benito, S.B. Co. (contd.) Aug. 8 child. Shot 1 Calif. Woodpecker in a small Valley Oak. At camp shot a Bewick Wren as it hopped around the trunk of a large cottonwood near the ground. Aug. 9. Hunted from 5-6:30 up the river. Shot a Brown Towhee in a small willow. This bird was one of 6 or 8 towhees that were drinking at a small puddle. Shot a Shrike in a small valley oak at the edge of the alfalfa patch just above camp. It was perched about 8 ft. above the ground. Shot a Western Bluebird, one of 4 or 5 perched in a valley oak at the edge of the alfalfa. Shot a Yellow-billed Magpie as it flew over the alfalfa patch. This bird had been foraging with about 20 others on the grassy hillslope above the alfalfa. Also saw Black Phoebe by the river; Calif. Quail - large flock watering at the river - came down through the brush when it approached the water most closely; Sparrow Hawks in Cottonwoods, Calif.; Jay - several in cottonwoods and Digger Pine. Plain Titmouse in small Digger Pine, Calif. Woodpecker in Valley Oak & Cottonwood; Flicker in dead cottonwood; Linnet - common in fields all along. Lark Sparrow - in flocks usually
