Itinerary
Aug.6 mi. ESE San Benito (contd.)
cold, Adenostoma. Shot 1 Nuttall Woodpecker and 1 White-breasted Nuthatch in the Blue oak. Also saw 1 Bewick's Wren, 1 Plain Titmouse, 5 Calif. Jays, 12+ Western Bluebirds, 1 Sparrow Hawk, 1 Sharp shinned Hawk. Spent about 45 min. Hunting in the Adenostoma. Saw no birds in that time but heard 1 Whin- Liz.
Returned to camp + Then hunted through a freshly irrigated alfalfa patch. There saw 15+ Meadowlarks, and about 12 Brewer Blackbirds and 2 Yellow billed Magpies foraging in the field. Shot 1 Meadowlark, went out by the river above Saw Maggies' dam. Then I shot 1 Rough Winged Swallow and 1 Brewer Blackbird
Went back down river to camp + Shot 1 Green-backed Goldfinch as it perched on a fence. I believe this bird was being fed by a parent bird just before I shot it. Shot 1 Calif. Quail from a flock, mostly 1/2 grown that had come down to water. I have noticed that most of the flocks of Quail are mixed - old birds, half grown and some small.
