Aug. 3 cont'd. 1 Brown Towhee and 1 Calif. Jay. Shot a Yellow-billed Magpie as it flew over. Shot a Flicker from a fence post where it was feeding on small ants. Shot a Calif. Woodpecker from a Valley Oak. Shot 1 Black Phoebe as it perched on a boulder by the stream and 2 Brewer Blackbirds as they foraged about on the sandy, damp stream bank.
Aug. 4 Yesterday evening about 8 P.M. heard Snatch Owls in the Cottonwood overhead. Flash'd two with the light and shot one of them.
This A.M. hunted up river from camp to Sam Maggini's dam. Sat for a while in the same clump of small Digger Pines as yesterday. Then I shot 1 Plain Finnoose, 2 Calif. Thrashers and 1 Calif. Jay. Shot 1 Shrike as it perched about 6 ft. above the ground in the lower branches of a Cottonwood. On a fence near the dam shot 1 Black Phoebe and 1 Say Phoebe. Shot a Black-headed Grosbeak from the topmost branches of a dead Cottonwood. Johnson brought me another Shrike
About 10 A.M. shot 2 Yellow-billed Magpies.
