contd. around the old stone buildings and hotel at San Benito.
After returning to camp, hunted around the edge of the corn field where I shot 1 Lutescent Warbler in Russian Thistle in the corn patch. Then hunted up the hillside E of us. Spent about an hour around a patch of Adenostoma and Manzanita but cooking for 2 Bren-fits didn't shoot any birds. Saw only 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk; 4 Linnet and 2 Western Bluebirds. However, I did hear one two Bren-fits. Hunted back thru blue-oaks where I shot 2 Plain Titmouses and 1 Bewick Shren. Near camp, shot 2 Brewer Blackbirds as they were foraging about on the damp sandy river bottom.
Johnson brought in a Calif. Jay and 2 Brown Jays today.
Aug 3 Hunted up the river about 14mi this morning. The water has risen over Sam Maggins dam during the weekend and is running down a couple of hundred yards below the dam. Birds were abundant all along that stretch. Sat under a small Yegge pine on the river bank and shot from them: 1 Linnet;
