July 3rd [am.] ESE San Benito (Cont'd.)
contd. Flock of 15-20 Yellow-billed Magpies in
a large Digger Pine. Apparently they were
gong to roost there. Shot 2 of the magpies.
Saw many bats this evening around
the pool above Sam Maggini's dam in the
river. Also heard several Screech Owls in
the Oaks and Cottonwoods.
Aug. 1 [th] A.M., hunted from 5-7 mostly around
the large Valley Oaks in the Corn field to the
W of camp. In the oaks, shot 1 Calif. Wood-
pecker, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch, 1 Plain
Jimouse. Also saw many Yellow-billed
Magpies, Calif. Jays, Linnetts and Lark
Sparrows in the oaks. Shot 1 Anna Humming
bird in the lower branches of a cottonwood.
Also shot 1 Wood Peice? In about the same
situation as the hummer. Shot 1 Calif. Jay
and 2 Linnetts from the topmost branch
of a large cottonwood. New birds seen
this morning new: Great Blue Heron-
1 flying down the river. Birds seem that
not recorded new: Bush-Tit, flock in
Plain
Blue Oak; Bluebird, common in all
situations. Buzzard, several flyones every
day; Red-tailed Hawk 2 seen circling
down canyon from camp.
