Itinerary
lmi. ESE San Benito, 1600 ft., San Benito Co., Calif.
July 29. Broke camp yesterday about 11 A.M. at Laguna Ranch. Drove down to the main San Benito-Hernandez road, turned off on the road to Bitterwater Valley and on to King City. Got groceries and shipped specimens at King City. Then returned to Bitterwater Valley and westward on the road to San Benito where we stopped for mail. Continued up the road along San Benito River to the above locality. This is at the Columbus School (U.S.G.S. topo sheet Priest Valley Quad.). Got permission to camp from Mr. Sam Maggini on whose ranch we are now located.
Last night heard Screech Owls in the Cottonwoods along the river bottom
This A.M., hunted from 7-8:30 along the river bottom. Here are a few scattered large cottonwoods and some willow along the banks. The river is very low and dry in places. Shot 1 Say Phoebe, 1 Black Phoebe, 1 Plain Titmouse, 1 Dark Sparrow, 1 Calif. Jay. Also saw Linnet, Flicker, Mourning Dove, Brown Towhee, Magpie, Brewer Blackbird, Western Great-chen, White-breasted Nut-hatch, Killdeer and Black-headed Grosbeak.
