Itinerary
Laguna Ranch, San Benito Co. (cont'd.)
July 25 cont'd. Large Elder trees around the house.
In them I shot a Linnet and 1 Lewis's
Woodpecker, both feeding on the ripe
berries. Picked up a dead Black-headed
Grosbeak under an Elder. The bird was app-
arrently shot by someone at the ranch. Saw
many other Grosbeaks in the Elders and
in the grain fields nearby. California Jays
and Green-backed Goldfinches were also
feeding on the berries. In large Valley
Oaks shot 1 Lewis's Woodpecker, 1 Calif.
Woodpecker, 1 Plain Titmouse and 1
White-breasted Nuthatch. Shot a Brown
Towhee at camp.
Talked a few minutes with Mr. Cade
this evening. He says Eagles nest on
Heptd am peak. He described a bird
which must be a Lazuli Bunting which
he has seen here (so far I have seen
none). He has told me in previous
conversation (July 19) of a Clarke's Nuthatch
which was here and stayed several
months. This is the 4th report we have
had of them in this region.
July 26. Hunted this AM. for about an hour in mixed
scrub-oak, Mountain Mahogany, Fumaria and-
