Itinerary
July 24 Laguna Ranch, San Benito Co. (cont'd).
contd. hopping along. The Lark Sparrows flyin'
low & perch in the lower branches of
trees 2-6 ft. off the ground. Bell Sparrows
work in slowly from bush to bush or
small tree and are generally 5-12 ft.
off the ground, perhaps because here
that is the densest part of the small blue
oaks. Linnet's fly in to the tops of the trees
and dive down to take a quick drink
generally from the tank. The other birds
listed above prefer to drink from puddles
on the ground.
July 25 Last evening about 9:30 scared up a
small owl by the water tank. It was apparently
on or near the ground when first "scared up".
I flashed it as it flew about 12 ft. to an out
house where it perched a moment on the
galvanized iron roof. It then flew about
8 ft. into a small dead Digger Pine. As it
perched, I noticed that the body was held
more nearly horizontal than do Screech Owls.
Shot the owl from the pine. As nearly as I
can determine, & it is a young Saw-whet
Owl.
This morning, hunted from 5:30-8 A.M.
around the ranch house. There are several
