Laguna Ranch, San Benito Co. (cont'd.)
July 20th.
Hunted back to camp through big Coulter pines, some Black Oak, Valley Oak & Digger Pine. Shot 1 Wood Pewee in the Coulter pine. Saw several Steller Jays and 1 Purple Martin in the Coulter Pines.
At camp shot a Brown Towhee at the edge of a scrub-oak thicket.
July 21. Hunted from 7-9 A.M. Shot 2 Black-headed Grosbeaks in an Elder bush in which they were feeding on the ripe berries. Shot a Calif. Thrasher from a scrub Oak nearby. Also saw w & Western Tanager in the Elder bush. Shot a Calif Jay in the lower branches of a small Blue Oak. Shot 1 Calif Woodpecker from a large Valley Oak. Sat for a while by a water tank where birds were coming in to drink. Three I shot: 1 Bell Sparrow, 1 Black Phoebe, 2 Juncos; 1 Berrick Wren, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch. The latter 2 apparently weren't after water.
Shot a garter snake as it climbed around the base of a large Blue oak on a dry grassy slope; the nearest water is at least 100 yds. away.
Johnson brought in a Steller Jay which he shot near a spring a short way up the canyon
