July 16 contd. when I shot the following birds: Calif.
Thrasher, 2; Brown Towhee, 1; Spotted
Towhee, 1; Chen-tit, 1; Calif. Jay, 1; Juncos,
1.
In the afternoon, shot 1 Spotted Towhee
and 1 Nuttall Woodpecker at camp.
July 17 This A.M. from 5-8 hunted up the caƱon
running SE from camp in scrub-oak,
mountain mahogany, Adenostoma, Fremontia
and shot the following birds: Brown Towhee,
1; Spotted Towhee, 1; Bell Sparrows, 2;
Unknown Sparrow (Lin.), 1; Bewick Wren, 2.
Caught a Phrynosoma in an open sandy
place in the Adenostoma
In the evening, Johnson brought in 2 Calif.
Thrasher
Went out just at dark and hunted in
the open sandy spots in scrub-oak etc to
the 2 of camp. Here I shot a Poor-will.
July 18 From 6-8 A.M. hunted in Valley Oak, Digger
Pine and wild rose etc. along the creek bed
where I shot 2 Juncos. From 9-11 hunted
up around a hill covered with small
Blue-Oak, some Valley Oak and Mountain
Mahogany with dry grass under &
between the trees. There I shot birds
