July 10

2 mi. SW Panoche, San Benits Co. (cont'd).
Hot Springs and the upper end of
Little Panoche Valley. At a point: 5¾ mi.
NW Panoche, 1500 ft., San Benits Co., Calif;
stopped and shot 2 Ammospemophilus
nelsoni. These were inhabiting a rock wall
at the side of the road. The only bushes
around were Ephedra and only sparse
grass covered the hillsides.
On the way back to camp, shot a
Burrowing Owl - one of 12± in a colony(?).
3 mi. NW Panoche, 1300 ft., San Benits Co., Calif.
Returned to camp. 2 mi. SW Panoche.
July 11
In the night last night, heard Horned Owls.
got up and tried to shoot one but could-
not get close enough. There were at least
4 around. Hunted from 2-4 A.M. with the
flash. Heard several Screech Owls and
shot 1 about 3:45 AM. This bird was
of cottonwood.
punched on a limb, 6-8 in. in diameter,
about 6 ft out from the trunk and 9
ft. off the ground-
This morning, Dr. Finnell brought in a
Sparrow Hawk and an Anna Hummer
and Dr. Lindsaye brought in a Say
Phoebe.
