Panoche Cr., 2 mi. SE Panoche (cont'd).
a Texas Nighthawk from a clump of large willows. It was finally shot after flying around close to the ground for several minutes.
July 3. In the A.M. 5-7; hunted in the open fields on the S side of the creek. Shot 1 Say Phoebe from a fence. Saw flocks of Horned Larks of 3, 4, 6, & 10. They all seemed to be moving rapidly toward the W land only one bunch of 4 was seen on the ground. Got as far over us the hills on the S side of the valley. Went up a small canyon about 1/4 mi. There were a few scattered bushes of Ephedra and Juniper there s in them & saw several Shrikes and 1 Say Phoebe. Returned across the fields and up the creek bottom. Saw a Roadrunner in the second bottom. Doves and Barn Owls were most common birds, Killdeer and Budgits next; Vigors Whew, Western Quailcater and Western Kingbird lead in the creek bottom.
Upon the second bottom in willows and cottonwoods, saw many Lark Sparrows and Linnets, and 1 Bullock Oriole. Birds flying overhead were Cliff Swallows, 1 young Redtailed Hawk and Turkey Vulture.
At 9 A.M. went with Johnson down to Panoche corners to get the mail. On the way, shot a
