Country with sparse grass. This time I found the Horned Larks at first in small bunches 3-5 but later in larger groups upto ±40 in number. Shot 8 Horned Larks. Saw the same birds seen this A.M. Some of the Kingbirds look large and dark. It appears that they might be Cassins.
About 8:30 P.M. caught a gopher snake? which crawled into camp. Hunted Screech Owls but again had no luck.
July 1 Hunted 5-6 A.M. over the same ground as yesterday. Shot 2 Horned Larks, 2 Western Kingbirds. At camp, shot a Nuttall Woodpecker from a large cottonwood.
Slightly after sundown shot a Pipistrelle in an opening in the trees near the creek.
July 2 This morning hunted 4:15-7 across the fields to the N of camp. Shot 9 Horned Larks. Also saw 4 or 5 Western Kingbirds, about an equal number of Meadowlarks. In a large cottonwood standing alone in the field again saw English Sparrow, Linnet and Shrike.
About 9 A.M., 3 Ravens flew over camp. We followed them up and across the creek where they perched on an old barn. We tried to approach but they were too wary + flew off up the creek. On the way back to camp, scared out
