Itinerary
Panoche Cr, 2 mi. SE Panoche (cont'd)
June 29 contd.
Shot 2 Bewick Wrens. Birds seen along the creek in decreasing order of abundance were:
Mourning Doves, Cliff Swallow, Bush-tit, Barn
Owl, Killdeer, Bewick Wren, Bullock Oriole, House
Wren, Western Bluebird. Hunted back on S side of this creek up on the level valley floor. Saw
a colony of Cliff Swallows with nests attached to
the steep cut bank of the creek. The valley has
been very heavily 'sheeped' and the fields are
hard above with only small wisps of grass
here and there. The only birds seen there
were Cliff Swallow and Texas Nighthawks and
a few Mourning Doves.
At dusk, shot a Pipistrellus in an open spot
near the creek. Tried to spot Scutch Owls but
didn't see any although several were heard.
June 30. Hunted from 4:30-7:11. Started out N from
camp across the fields. Three Doves Western
Kingbird, Western Meadowlark and Lark
Sparrow - The latter more common around
the edges near the cottonwoods. Hoped to find
Horned Larks but saw none. Johnson reports
seeing them farther N. Saw young Red-tailed
Hawk, English Sparrows and Linnet in the
large isolated
cottonwoods in the field.
In the late afternoon, again N in the open
