Itinerary
Panoche Cr., 1200 ft., 2 mi. SE Panoche, San Benito Co., Calif.
June 29 Broke camp 2 mi. NNE New Idria yesterday about 3 P.M. and drove via John Ashurst's ranch and Gismold Creek to Panoche. Near Dixon Spring we saw 4 Ravens which were too wary to approach close enough for a shot.
We also ran into a flock of Horned Larks by the edge of the road. Of these, I shot 6 birds and Johnson shot 2. This locality designated as: N.W. Dixon Spring, 1900 ft., 8 mi. NNW New Idria, San Benito Co., Calif..
At Panoche "corners", we turned right on the road down Panoche Cr. toward the San Joaquin. Got permission to camp at a ranch about 2 1/2 mi. E of Panoche and came back to the above locality where we got camp set up about 6 P.M. At camp in the evening I shot a Pipistrellus hesperis and after dark shot a Screech Owl. There were several Screech Owls around camp in the Cottonwoods and Willows but this was the only one I could locate with the flashlight.
It was perched on a dead branch close to the trunk about 12 ft. off the ground in a large willow near the creek.
This evening, hunted down the creek about 1/2 mile through the willows and Cottonwoods.
