Palmer 1936 Itinerary 2 mi. NNE New Idria (contd) June 22 cont'd Scrub-oak, Artemisia californica, Adenostoma and Arctostaphylos sp. North of camp, there are some high sandstone cliffs, 60-100 ft. high, with many "potholes" on their faces. We went over and examined the cliffs and I scared out a scrub-owl which Johnson shot. Also saw 2 Barn Owls and found many Barn Owl pellets. Saw many doves and quail. Returned to camp in the evening when I saw several small bats (Probably Myotis and Pipistrellus). June 23 Caught a Hamnophis ordinoides at camp today. It was on the terrace above the creek about 15 ft. from the water. When pursued, it took refuge under a boulder. This A.M., from 9-12, hunted up along the creek. Shot a Cnemidophorus in grass under a small Blue Oak. Shot a Bewick when at the edge of the chaparral and a Cooper Hawk in the Cottonwoods. Birds were very scarce. The only common ones were Lark Sparrows, Green-backed Goldfinches and Linnets. Also saw Ash-throated Flycatcher, Plain Titmouse and an Empidonax in the cottonwoods and Doves and Quail in the small Blue Oaks and grass.
