Palmer 1936 Itinerary June 20 cont'd. 1 mi. SE Santa Rita Pk., San Benito Co. (cont'd.) Johnson in red soil in a burned over hill-side. The scrub oak was just sprouting up again 1-2 ft. high here. Drove on back to the base of Santa Rita Pk. and hiked up the west side. The whole peak has been burned over. The scrub oak has sprouted up about 2-3 ft. Saw no birds, chick. Saw 2 Eagles flying over the summit but they flew off as we approached. The summit of the peak is a jumble of bare rocks mostly very large boulders. There I shot 1 Rock Wren. Also saw White-throated Swifts. Locality there = Summit Santa Rita Pk., 5165 ft., San Benito Co., Calif. Returned to camp just before dark. June 21 Returned to the gem mine about 5 AM. There I shot 2 Purple Martins as they flew about a large dead pine. Also shot 1 Brush rabbit at the edge of the mixed scrub-oak (Ceanothus cuneatus). Johnson picked up the gopher traps and we returned to camp. At camp 1 mi. SE summit San Benito Mtn. shot 1 White-breasted Nuthatch as it worked around the trunk of a 20 ft. Coulter pine with 2 others. Also shot 1 Ash-throated Flycatcher in another Coulter pine of about the same size.
