The locality for the birds collected
was given as: Summit San Benits Mtn,
5250 ft, San Benito Co, Calif.
At camp, in the evening about 7:35
saw a small wosl fly over. I chased
after it but lost it in the pines. On the
way back, in an opening between the
conifers, I shot 2 Poorwells, one of them
too badly to save.
June 19. In the late afternoon caught a Scapanus
latiwenus in 1 of the 3 mole traps.
The mole was still alive and was kept
under observation for about 1/2hr.
In the evening, heard a Sparrow Hawk
making a racket. I stepped out of the tent
& saw it pursuing a Swainson Hawk.
Got a snap shot at it over the trees, but
the 10s wouldn't kill it. Johnson reported
the hawk farther down the canyon. He
also reports seeing a Black Phoebe going
up the canyon. It would fly a ways
then light a moment, then fly on. Apparent-
ly it was just passing through.
Went hunting about 7 P.M. Hunted up
the road along the creek that joins the
creek that runs by camp. Saw a Bushy
Rabbit at the edge of the road. It
