June 18 cold.
January
rather small - 10-25 ft. high but there are
a few larger trees 30+ ft. high, most of the latter somewhat twisted and wind bent.
Hunted around the summit from 4:30 -
7:00 P.M. and shot the following birds:
1 Spotted Towhee, in mixed small Coulter
Pines and brush; 2 Bewick Wrens, in mixed
Coulter Pines and brush; 1 Western Grackle,
in manzanita and sycamore; 1 Juncos
in Coulter Pines; 1 Black-chinned Sparrow
in mixed chaparral and Coulter Pines.
Also saw several others of the above species
and: Green-backed Goldfinch, Black-
throated Gray Warbler, Linnet (?), Plain
Titmouse in the Coulter Pines. Bell
Sparrow and Yellow-tit in the chaparral;
White-throated Swift and Mourning
Dove flying over. Saw no gopher or
mole workings at the summit but saw
mole workings at about 4900 ft. on the
E side of the Mtn. On the way back to camp,
shot a Brush rabbit on the rocky ridge
in sparse, low chaparral.
On the way up the mountain we saw and
pursued a Phrynosoma at about the
5000 ft. level on rocky soil in sparse
chaparral, but it got away.
