Itinerary
June 17 The locality for the Black-chinned sparrow
contrad.
was determined as: 1/2 mi. SE summit Saw
Benito Dtn., 4900 ft., Saw Benito Co., Calif.
June 18 This A.M. moved one of the mole traps. Insects
seem to be rather scarce here - so far have
catched only one.
From 10-12:30 A.M. hunted with Johnson
for reptiles + amphibians along the creek
for about a mile below camp. Caught a
large Thamnophis ordinoides. This was
first seen in the road about 15 ft. from
the stream. When pursued, it entered a
Rhamnus bush and crawled around
in the branches near the top of the bush
until "axed". Also caught 2 Sceloporus
and 1 Rana. Found a skull of a young
wood-rat while I was tearing up a rotten
log.
In the afternoon, hiked up Saw Benito
Dtn. with Johnson. The summit of the
mountain - 5258 ft. is rather flat; sloping
slightly to the SE. The top of the mountain
is rocky soil and is mostly covered by
rather open type of chaparral. The chaparral
is predominately scrub-oak with Manganita,
and Ceanothus cuneatus intermixed. Scattered
over the flat are Coulter Pines; most of them
