Golden Eagle, Mourning Dove, Red-
shafted Flicker and Black-chinned Sparrow.
The last species was looked for especially,
but only the one bird was seen and it was out
of range.
June 15 Caught Scapanus latimanus in the 3
mole traps.
In the afternoon drove down to New Idria
for mail but didn't get any. On the way back
stopped at a flat of about 10 acres. This locality
designated as 1 mi. S New Idria, 3700 ft., San
Benito Co., Calif.. The flat is grassy (dry)
Facing NE. The hill to the SW is brush covered
& the uppedge of the flat is covered by
a growth of scrubby Blue oak, Digger Pine
and Cercocarpus betulae folias (?). Hunted
around there & shot 1 Anna Humming-
bird and 1 Spotted Towhee. Saw a few
Bewick Whens and a small flock of
Lawrence Goldfinches. The flat is largely
dry grass with a few patches of
Eriodictyon californicum. The edges of
the flat are covered by Chrysothamnus.
To the E it drops off into a steep canyon.
In the grassy part of the
flat saw many Lark Sparrows
& Calif Quail in the Eriodictyon. Shot a
Say Pheobe from an Elder bush, and a
