June 13 contd.
Lands SE summit San Benitos Mtn. (contd.)
pines. Thus I shot a Shrenk it and an
unknown which is, I think, a Bell Sparrow.
Returned down the canyon and near its
upper end, shot a Black-shinned Sparrow
in the scrub-oak.
In the evening, Johnson came in with
a Poor-will which he shot in the road
E of camp.
June 14 Hoped to get up to the summit of San Benitos
Mtn. today but it was cloudy all day
+ about 4:30 P.M. started to rain. Hunted
birds 4:30 to 7:00 P.M. Hunted over the
"plateau" SW of camp where I got yesterday morning. At first, the rain was
rather hard + saw and heard very few
birds. In a short time it eased up and
the birds were very active. In the pines
(Coulter + Diggs) at the edge of the
brush, shot 2 Thrashers (both young)
One old parent was nearby but I couldn't
get a shot at it. In the brush shot 2 Shrenk
Lito, 2 Bell Sparrows and 1 Plain Titmouse.
Other birds were: Calif. Jay, Ash-Throated
Flycatcher, Black-Throated Gray Warbler,
Spotted Forster, Busk-Lit, Bewick Wren,
Western Flycatcher. All these were
rather common. Saw single birds off,
