Jun 13 contd. low SE summit saw Benito Mtn. (cont'd)
1/ Fairy Woodpecker, 1 White-breasted
Nuthatch in the conifers. Hunted slightly to
the west & into a brushy little canyon with
a small stream in it. Here in the
chaparral, I shot a Spotted Forther, 1 Black-
Throated Gray Warbler and 1 Bewick Wren.
The 2 mole traps caught nothing. Shot 2
chipmunks when I went to examine mole traps.
June 13 Hunted birds this A.M. up the same little
canyon SW of camp where I was yesterday.
In the conifers shot 1 Green-backed
Goldfinch of a pair which was flushed in
the Topogam Incense cedar near the stream.
Sat down by the creek at the edge of the
brush & counted 15 birds within 20 feet of
me, inside of 1 minute. These were: Spotted
Forther, 2; Bush-Tit, 5; Western Gratecatcher,
3, Bewick Wren, 2; Wren-tit, 2; Small
Flycatchers (Empidonax sp.) 1. I shot the
flycatcher. Shot a Bewick Wren a little further
up the canyon & on looking up after wrapping
it saw a Black-chinned Sparrow in a
nearby Ceanothus and shot it. At the head
of the creek, came out on a sort of plateau
which is fairly level & brush covered with
Scrub-olive predominating and 'Mangarita,
Ceanothus cuneatus and a few small
