Itinerary
1 mi. SE summit San Benito Mtn., (cont'd.)
The main road for San Benito Peak.
Camped that night about 1 mi. up the road
from this locality. This morning drove
back [generally NW] to the highest ridge and
hiked up a spur of San Benito Mtn., then
oriented ourselves with the map, drew,
and
looked for the best appearing place to
camp. Walked back to the car and drove down
to the above locality where we set up camp.
In the afternoon, Johnson drove to Idria
& I stayed in camp where I collected
several Sceloporus which are very common
here. About 4:30 P.M. went hunting for
birds. Hunted first thru Conifers--mixed
Coulter Pine, Digged Pine, Incense Cedar,
and Yellow Pine. These are rather scattered
and small (mostly 20-40 ft. high). Saw
few birds there - Shot one Spotted Towhee and
saw two others. Then hunted through the
chaparral on a N facing slope. The chaparral
is dense and low, 3-4 1/2 ft. high and
mostly scrub oak with some Ceanothus,
Gooseberries, Manzanita and Rhamnus.
There I shot a Lutescent Warbler and
a Black-chinned Sparrow. Saw many
Western Gratecuckus, several Spotted Towhees,
