June 9: Broke camp at Butts Ranch yesterday, leaving there about 11 A.M. Drove via Emmet and Paicines to Fred Pinos for supplies. Then back along the road up the San Benito River. Stopped at Pineroch ranch which belongs to George Butts, brother of Willie Butts on whose ranch we were camped. Stayed a few minutes and then continued on up the river road to San Benito where we turned off onto the highway. There saw a very large dead gopher snake lying by the road. Drove on via Bitterwater to Hernandez where we collected a Boyle King snake in the road. Enquired for mail at Hernandez Post Office. The Postmaster reported the taking by a neighbor last winter of a bird like a small crow-gray with black and white wings. Probably, in my opinion, a Clarke Nutcracker. He also showed us a picture of a Mountain Lion killed by him last winter. We turned off the road and continued up Clear Creek towards Idria. Where we crossed the summit at [illegible] ft., I saw Mole ridges on the bare hilltop. Got off on several sideroads which are on the map but are not usable any more. Finally enquired our way at a mine and got on
