Palmer 1936 February Butts Ranch, San Benitos Co. (Cont'd.) June 7, 8. Mourning Dove - Common in grainfields, in willows along the stream and in the Blue Oak-Digger Pine belt. 9 Roadrunner - Seen twice along Tres Rios Creek bottom about 1 mi W of Emmett School. 10 Screech Owl - One heard in the valley oaks about 11 P.M. on May 25. 11. Horned Owl - Several seen at dusk usually flying over the valley around the large valley oaks. One young shot from Valley Oaks. 12 Poorwill - Heard several times on clear nights from the chaparral. None seen. Butts reported that they were commonly seen in the road at night. 13 Anna's Hummingbird - Fairly common in the live oaks and damp caƱons. 14 Calliope Hummingbird - One collected (not saved) as it flew about in the periphery of a live oak - apparently gathering spiderwebs. 15 Downy Woodpecker - 5 or 6 seen during our stay. All but one in cottonwoods by the house. One seen in an elder bush at the edge of an old apple orchard. 16 Nuttall's Woodpecker - Common especially in cottonwoods and valley oaks. Also seen in Live Oaks & Blue Oak-Digger Pine associations.
