Butts Ranch, San Benito Co. (Contd.)
June 7 cont'd.
A list of birds as seen in this locality from May 25 to date is as follows:
1. California Condor - none seen. Reported by Butts as being seen infrequently "farther back in the hills."
2. Buzzard - Been nearly every day circling overhead. Usually only 1, 2, or 3 together.
3. Sharp-shinned Hawk - Several seen, usually flying low over the chaparral or higher over the valley.
4. Cooper Hawk - Seen nearly every day, but usually only one or 2 per day. Usually flying low over the brush or through the treetops in the live oaks or less commonly the blue oaks.
5. Red-tailed Hawk - Rather common. Several pairs were nesting around the ranch. Nests were all in Digger Pines 30-50 ft. from the ground.
6. Sparrow Hawk - A few seen. Almost all seen were flying over in pursuit of some larger hawk. A few seen perched in Valley Oaks.
7. Calif. Quail - Fairly common in chaparral and grain fields. Small downy young seen about May 31. Nest found June 1.
