Palma 1936 January Butt Ranch, San Benito Co. (contd.) June 7 cont'd. Stream and numerous willows up to 18-20 ft. in height. Around the ranch house are several large Cottonwoods and some large elder trees. The hillsides slope up gradually from the valley and are rounded and generally grassy. Around the edge and out in the grain fields are a few large Valley oaks. The hillsides are covered in many places by Blue Oaks with some Valley Oak and Digger Pine intermixed. Much of the hillsides, especially S.& W. of camp, are covered by dense chaparral - mainly scrub oak but with some manzanita, mountain mahogany, Ceanothus cuneatus and small digger pine & Blue oak intermixed. Tops of the ridges are often covered by almost pure Adenostoma. Several small canyons run into the valley from the east and west. These are more densely wooded and more shaded & cooler. They are commonly filled with large live oaks, some Digger Pine and Valley Oak. with dense underbrush of scrub oak, Poison oak, Amelanchier, wild cherry, wild rose and California buckeye.
