Butt Ranch, San Benito Co. (contd.)
June 7 cont'd. Stream and numerous willows up to 18-20 ft.
in height. Around the ranch house are several
large Cottonwoods and some large elder trees.
The hillsides slope up gradually from the
valley and are rounded and generally grassy.
Around the edge and out in the grain fields
are a few large Valley oaks. The hillsides are
covered in many places by Blue Oaks with
some Valley Oak and Digger Pine intermixed.
Much of the hillsides, especially S.& W. of camp,
are covered by dense chaparral - mainly
scrub oak but with some manzanita, mountain
mahogany, Ceanothus cuneatus and small
digger pine & Blue oak intermixed. Tops of the
ridges are often covered by almost pure
Adenostoma. Several small canyons run
into the valley from the east and west. These
are more densely wooded and more shaded &
cooler. They are commonly filled with large
live oaks, some Digger Pine and Valley Oak.
with dense underbrush of scrub oak, Poison
oak, Amelanchier, wild cherry, wild rose and
California buckeye.
