June 4 contd.
Butte Ranch, San Benito Co (cont'd.)
Plain Titmouses, Lawrence? Goldfinches,
a Bewick Wren and a Cooper Hawk.
Hunting in the heavy chaparral is rather hard & not very productive. Returned to on the way back camp & shot a Jackrabbit at the edge of a scrub Oak thicket. on the way back.
At camp saw 3 bats flying about and I shot one Eptesicus. All these appear to be the same. Then saw one small bat (Myotis?) flying about under the Cotton-woods. Saw one duck under the eaves of the house. Got a ladder & went up in the attic where I saw 3, all of which got out.
June 5 At camp today, shot 1 Plain Titmouse, 1 White-breasted Nuthatch and 2 Downy Woodpeckers from the Cottonwood trees. Johnson brought in 2 Yellow-billed Magpies and a Downy Woodpecker.
June 6. Hard rain this A.M. Didn't attempt to hunt birds. Shot 1 Calif. Jay from a tree at camp. Went out about 6 P.M. after it had ceased raining and had cleared off somewhat. Caught 2 Mylas in the creek. Saw very few birds: Brown Towhee, Bullock Oriole, Calif. Jay, Mourning Dove.
