Bullock Ranch, 3000 ft., San Benito Co., (cattle)
June 3. Drove in to Hollister today for supplies.
On the way in, noticed a Road-runner
about 2 mi. W of Emmet School and saw
a pair of Phainopeplas in an Elderbush
about a mile farther on. Had heavy
rain from Paicines & Hollister and rain off
and on most of the day. Returned in
the afternoon arriving at camp about
4 P.M. Here found it clear and sunshiny
with only a few scattered clouds.
June 4 This A.M., examined mole traps and
found 1 in the trap in the canyon.
Moved this trap about 50 yds farther
up the canyon. Shot a young Junco
in a live oak. This was one of several (3?)
which were with the parent birds.
In the afternoon hunted from 2:30 to
6. Went west of camp up the ridge &
thence southerly over the divide into the
Salt Creek drainage. Hunted around chaparral
consisting of Lembe Oak, Manzanita and
Adenostoma. Then shot 2 Whewtits and
a Calif. Jay. Heard several Thrashers.
and tried to get near them but couldn't.
Also heard Spotted Towhees, Brown Towhees
and Calif. Quail Then. Saw Brush- Tits,
