Palmer 1936 January Butte Ranch, San Benito Co. (Cont'd.) June 1 contd. Jays, Red-tailed Hawk, California Woodpecker, Western Bluebird, Ash-throated Flycatcher and Wood Pewee. Shot a Plain Titmouse from a dead Valley Oak and a California Thrasher and a Junco from Live Oaks in a gulch. Saw I also saw a Brush Rabbit. From Big Oak Flat went on back to the Butte Ranch. On the way we flushed a Calif. Quail and found a nest. The nest was on the ground on a north facing hillside under a small scrub Oak about 2 ft. high. The nest contained 13 eggs. At the edge of the grainfield in the oaks and Digger Pine, Johnson shot a Junco and a Western Bluebird. We saw Bats (Eptesicus?) flying over & stopped hoping to get a shot but saw no more. However, Johnson pointed out two Horned Owls sitting on the limb of a dead Valley Oak. I shot one which turned out to be rather young. Arrived at the camp about 8:30 P.M. June 2. Did no hunting. Skinned birds collected yesterday.
