Palma 1936 February Butts Ranch, San Benito Co. cont'd. May 31 contd. of the canyon I shot 2 Anna Hummingbirds, 1 Calliope Hummer. There also saw Western Tanager, Black-throated Gray Warbler, Lutescent Warbler, Spotted Towhee, Western Bluebird, Junco [illegible] and Cooper's Hawk. In The chaparral on the north side, shot a Vigors Bewick Wren, and 1 Plain Titmouse. Also got a glimpse of a Wren Tit and a Spotted Towhee hen and heard Calif. Quail. Got a shot at a Chipmunk but but failed to get it. Returned to camp on way back saw Sparrow Hawks, California Woodpeckers, Ash-throated Flycatchers and Western Wood Pewees in The Valley Oaks of the flat. Found 1 Scapanus latimanus in one of the traps in the creek bottom. In the afternoon shot a female Downy Woodpecker from one of the big Cottonwoods by the house. Johnson returned with several birds from the higher country to the SE. June 1 After lunch went with Johnson to The higher country to The SE. Across the grain fields and around the edge of flat The usual birds were common. Noted a Red-tailed Hawk's nest
