slopes covered by Blue Oak. From a large
Valley Oak shot a Nuttall Woodpecker and
in the chaparral beside it (Scrub Oak,
Ceanothus, Mountain Mahogany) shot a
Plain-Jormouse. Also saw Brown Jay, California Jay and Calif. Thrasher here.
Went up a small canyon heading West
and set a mole [moved from the creek

bottom) in a fresh surface ridge in the
moist sand of the dry creek bed here.
Saw many Gnatcatchers and several
Spotted Towhees here in the Live Oak,
Poison Oak, Rhamnus association.
Hunted on up the canyon & shot at a pair
of Juncos but failed to get them.
Scared out a Redtailed Hawk which flew
down canyon.
Hunted back toward camp along the
ridge which is grassy & covered by
large Blue Oaks with a very few Digger
Pines. Here I shot 2 Slender-billed
Nuthatchers and a House Wren. Returned
to camp & in an oak near the house,
shot one of a pair of Yellow-billed
Maggies. When picked up this bird had
