Palmer 1936 January Butts Ranch, 3000 ft., San Benito Co. (cont'd) May 26 (cont'd.) Valley Oak saw a pair of Nuttall Woodpeckers. Returned to camp & there saw a Sparrow Hawk which was being pursued by several small birds. At camp saw a pair of Downy Woodpeckers in the big cottonwoods by the house. Shot one which hung up in the tree. Went in the tent to finish putting up a bird & when I came back the woodpecker had disappeared. Either it recovered and flew away or one of the numerous cats got it. In the evening heard a Poor-will call to the SW apparently near the chaparral. May 27 Woke this A.M. to find it cloudy and cold with a raw wind from the south. Hunted through the chaparral SW of camp. Shot 1 Vigor's Bewick Wren and a Chipping Sparrow there. Then crossed the grain field & shot 2 Magpies in the willow along the creek. Shot a Violet Green Swallow from a flock of about 30 which were flying about over a small canyon catching insects. Very few birds were out this morning. Saw only those mentioned above and Linnet, Green-
