Palmer 1936 January Butts Ranch, 3000 ft. San Benito Co. (cont'd.) May 25 contd... and many Black Headed Grosbeaks. In the evening Thought I heard a Screech Owl call once May 26 Went out around Johnson's Trapline with him this A.M. Shot a Vigor when in the chaparral and while squeaking it up aroused a chipmunk which chirped at me for some time. Saw a flock of Bushtits near here. Heard no Thrashers nor Wrentits (It is very foggy this morning - almost misty). Heard Calif. Woodpeckers, Calif. Jays and Black Headed Grosbeaks in the oaks. Shot a Kitmouse in the Live Oaks Scared out a band of Calif. Quail there, and also a Jackrabbit. Went across the grainfield & saw very few birds. One or two Bullock Orioles in the willows by the stream and several Brewer Blackbirds there. Saw + shot at several Belding Ground Squirrels on the open grassy hillsides Saw 2 or 3 Magpies in the Oaks. Around the barn or horse corral saw several Black Phoebes which I hadn't noticed yesterday.
