brushes of Baccharis and tall stalks of dead Thistles and grasses. To the N there is a marshy area where El Cerrito Creek flows into the bay. This area is largely covered by low Salicornia.
The only mammals seen were 3 Norway Rats near the edge of the marsh. Runways and tunnels indicate a good population of Microtus and Gophers. Also found a few mole workings in the softer ground.

Left Berkeley about 3:30 P.M. with E.T. Tropes and D.K. Johnson and drove E via Claremont Canyon, Lafayette and Walnut Creek to Mt. Diablo.
Entered the park via the South gate and continued up the road to a point about 2 mi. by road from the summit where we left the main road, turning left following signs to Laurel Wk or Deer Flat trail. Stopped about 200 yds. from the main road by the Park boundary fence. Went through the gate there
