Scapanus latimanus
Palmer
1935
Angel Island, San Francisco Bay, Marin Co., Calif.
Oct. 17 Found mole workings common on the island. On the N.W. side of the island saw a mole pushing up a mound in soft moist black earth under Coylus, Blackberry and Poison Oak. I made a grab for it with my hands but failed to get it
Oct. 20. Caught 1 (B) in one of 9 Macabee gopher traps set in deep runways on an open hillside in heavy red-brown soil. There were many mounds here. The soil was quite moist a short distance (about 1 inch) below the surface, but the ground was baked on top. Found cutworms and sowbugs in the soil which are probably an important part of the moles' food here.
