of gulch by bushes of Salvia apiana,
Artemisia californica or Salvia mellifera.
The rest were set across a slope of
hard adobe soil with scattered plants
of Artemisia californica, Salvia apiana,
Eriogonum fasciculatum, Opuntia sp.;
and at the end of the line saw there
a patch of Avena fatua where there
were also a few plants of Cucurbita
foetidissima.
Aug. 15 At 6 A.M. found 16 mammals of the
following species in the 40 traps: Neotoma
elegida, 1; Dipodomys agilis, 2; Perognath-
us fallax, 5; Reithrodontomys megalotis,
3; Peromyscus eremicus, 2; Peromyscus
maniculatus, 3.
Saw several brush rabbits and 1
jack rabbit. There was quite a flock
(50-60) Doves in the wild Oats. Wren-
fits and Gratecatchers were quite common
and saw 1 Brown Towhee.
Aug. 17 Left Ontario and drove via Rancho Santa
Ana Canyon, Olive, Justin and Irvine
to Laguna Beach.
