8 mi. E Crescent City, Del Norte Co., Calif.
Broke camp this morning 7 mi. ENE Smith River about 9 A.M. On the way out took in the 4 steel traps set for Aplodontia. They were undisturbed. Drove down to Lost Divide where Johnson and Deach shot a Calif. Jay. They were in lone pine trees (Pinus rigida, P. attenuata, P. monticola) on a rather bare rocky ridge. Here also saw Spotted Forkees, Brew-kits & Brush-kits in Western Azalea, and Fan Oak in a gulch. This place designated as Lost Divide, 1000 ft., 6½ mi. E Smith River, Del Norte Co., Calif.: Continued on S to Smith River. I was again impressed by the narrow belt of Redwood here (about 6 mi.)
From Smith River turned SE along the N side (stream) of Smith River for about 5 mi. and to the Redwood Highway which we followed E for about 2 mi. and crossed just above where the S Fork of Smith River joins the main fork of Smith River. Followed up the S. Fork to the end of the road but could find no good place to camp so returned to the main fork and tried to get permission to camp around Bertelada but couldn't. So drove toward up the road that runs SE to Soldiers Well. About 3 mi. up the road found a
