Palmer 1935 July 20 7 mi., ENE Smith River, 1800 ft. (cont'd.) The grassy flat; with tongues of meadow running back into the brush and trees. Around the wedge are Douglas Fir, Tanoak, Quercus dumosa, Rhododendron occidentale, Madrone, California Bay. Along the stream on the E side is a dense thicket of Rubus vitifolius, R. specabilis, California Bay and Alders. Near the stream about the middle of the flat is a small abandoned cabin. Set a line of 28 gm-size mouse traps around the wedge of the meadow. Found several mole workings and set 2 traps. Heard Song Sparrows and Spotted Towhees Saw Hermit Thrushes, Drew-tits, Chestnut-backed Chickadees and Nighthawks. At camp saw several small bats flying swiftly at the edge of heavy Douglas Fir forest from 8:00-8:45 P.M. July 21 This morning found 2 Aplodontia rufa in 5 #1 steel traps. Hole in the Ground, 1200 ft., 7½ mi. ENE Smith River, Del Norte Co, Calif. In 28 gm-size mouse traps set around the W side caught 12 Peromyscus maniculatus. 2 mole traps caught nothing. Saw a
