Palmer 1935 Itinerary July 19 cont'd. 1 mi. ENE Smith River, 1800 ft. (cont'd.) brushes of Scrub Oak, or Tan Oak, or manzanita over under scrubby Knob-cone Pines. On the way back to camp saw a Fairy Wood- pecker on a Douglas Fir by the road, July 20 Winter Spring, 1800 ft., 1 mi. E Smith River, Del Norte Co., Calif. In 39 gor.-size mouse traps and 4 rub-traps caught 8 Peromyscus maniculatus and 6 Peromyscus truei. Saw a Brush Rabbit in a dense low clump of scrub oak near the spring but couldn't get a shot. Shot a Hermit Thrush from a small pine tree near the spring. Heard Junco's and Spotted Towhees. Returned to camp and examined the 5 still traps in Aplodontia runways but they were undisturbed. In the evening went down with Johnson to the Hole in the Ground. The trail leaves the road about 1/2 mi. S of our camp and the trail down is about 1 1/4 mi. Hole in the Ground is a small level meadow about 75-150 ft. in the canyon bottom. A small stream (tributary to W.K. Smith River) flows along the E border of the meadow. Grass in the meadow is about half green and half dry. A rather dense growth of trees and chaparral surrounds.
