Palmer 1935 Itinerary July 17 mi. E NE Smith River, 1800 ft. (contd.) contd. Also set 4 rat traps at bases of large Douglas Firs for flying squirrels. Birds heard or seen around camp today: Spotted Towhee, Hermit Thrush, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Wren-tit, Steller Jay. July 18 In 32-gor-size mouse traps this B.M. found 5 Peromyscus maniculatus. 4 rat traps caught nothing. Shot a Juncos from a bush under the Douglas Firs. Scared out a pair of Band- tailed Pigeons from a tall Douglas Fir. Also saw Hermit Thrush and Steller Jay. Heard Wren-tit, Spotted Towhee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Chestnut- backed Chickadee. July 19 Heavy fog came in last night. Tree drip steadily. In 32 gor-size mouse traps caught 3 Peromyscus maniculatus. 4 rat traps cught nothing. Look in traps intending to them. more, few birds out this morning Juncos, Hermit Thrush and Wren-tits. In the afternoon went down the road (5) about 3/4 mi. to the Aplodentia wakings Johnson found. There made 5 sets with #1 steel traps in Aplodontia burrows. Most of these are in salal (Gaultheria shallon) mixed with small Lithocarpus densiflorus with a few large Tan Oaks and Madrone.
