Itinerary
Rowdy Cr., Wz mi. E Smith River, Del Norte C., Calif.
July 16 cont'd. Broke camp on E. Sk. Illinois R. about
2:30 P.M. and drove via Jakilma and Waldo
(Oregon) to The Redwood Highway and via that
to Crescent City. Here we turned N and
followed the coast highway to the town of
Smith River and then E to the above locality.
The Redwood Highway follows Smith River
from its head down to about 8 mi. from
Crescent City. The plant association along
the creek was much like that at E Sk. Illinois
R. with more Madrons. We watched for the
first Redwood as we approached the coast.
The first seen were a small clump of
rather small trees about 2 mi. E? of
a place marked Bertulda on our map,
or about halfway between Myrtle Creek
and Hardscrabble Creek. From there on
in to Crescent City we passed thru several
typical groves of large Redwoods. A great
deal of the country between Crescent
city and Smith River (town) has been
logged off and is now small second
growth or snags and stumps.
Camp here is in typical Redwood associ-
ation. Rowdy Creek is about 25 ft. wide, rather
shallow and slow flowing. Its banks
