E. Fk. Illinois R, 1900 ft. (cont'd.)
July 13 (cont'd.) who has a mining claim about '½ mi.
alove here. He is interested in "Biology" and seems
to know the mammals and birds fairly well.
I think his information quite reliable. He has
trapped for furs for several years. He says
Black bears are common (2 color phases). Spotted
skunks also common. Last winter he caught
Wildcat and Coyote. He has never caught
any mink or Ring-tailed cats but says other
trappers get a few. He says Jackrabbits are
common but has seen only a few Brush
rabbits. Says Digger Squirrels and Woodrats
are common.
At dusk shot bats at the edge of the
clearing. Shot 1 Eptesicus fuscus and
2 Myotis. There were fewer bats flying
than the night before and they were flying
lower. This is probably due to the clouds
which cover the sky. However, it is warm
and rather sultry.
July 14 This morning found nothing in 28 good-
sized mouse traps and 4 rat traps. Took the
line up. In 20 traps in Microtus runways
in grass and Melilotus caught 1 Microtus
californicus. Caught nothing in 4 mole traps.
Shot a 1 Certhia familiaris from a Garry Oak.
