July 11 (contd.)
In the afternoon, Johnson and I went up the E. Fk. of The Illinois River about ½ mi. Johnson shot a jav. Janco from an alder by the stream.
Also heard many Hermit Thrushes and Chestnut backed Chickadees. Saw several Robins.
Birds are not very abundant here. On the way back to camp caught a Rana boylii on a large boulder in the stream.
About 7:30 bats started to fly. Shot a Myotis around a shed at the edge of the flat. Also saw a number of larger bats?
Have a line of 28 gor.-size mouse traps out tonight. These all set in Microtus runways in grass at the edge of the garden or in a patch of Melilotus. Also set 2 modified Mecobutaps [illegible] or near set 2 mole traps, in runways in the garden.
July 12 In 28 gor.-size mouse traps caught nothing. 5 mole sets caught nothing.
Went in to Yakima, Oregon for mail and supplies. On the way back just over the line in California, saw a Sciurus griseus.
Set a line of 28 gor.-size mouse traps on the W side of The E. Fk. Illinois R., The line runs a short way thru mixed Garry Oak, Madrona, Douglas Fir, Yellow Pine, Sugar Pine and Incense
