Palmer
1935
Itinerary.
July 8, 1935
Pole Flat, 5000 ft. (contd.)
This morning 68 traps in the meadow field.
1 Sorex bendirii, 1 Sorex palustris, 2 Zapus
pacificus, 5 Microtus mordaax, 6 Peromyscus
maniculatus.
In the afternoon went up the ridge to the
roof of camp & hunted for sparrows but saw
none. Shot 1 Eutamias amoenus, 1 Eutamias
townsendii, 1 Sciurus douglasii, and 1
Sclerophorus rugosus. Saw Douglas Ground
squirrel in a bush but couldn't get a good
shot. Heard a commotion among the birds—
Chickadees, Calanera's Wackles (?), Hermit
Wackle and Red-breasted Methatch. An invest-
gation scared out a Pegmy Owl from the
lower branches of a dead fir tree. It flew
off thru a dense thicket of young firs
and I couldn't get a shot.
Other birds seen: On the ridge—Hermit
Thrush and Junco; In firs—White-headed
Woodpecker, Audobon Wackle, Dusky Grouse
(4 and 3 jrs.), Steller Jay, Pine Siskin, and
Western Tanager; In the wet meadow—Allen
Hummingbird, Lincoln Sparrows, and Robin.
One Allen Hummer was watched for
several minutes catching insects on the
wing. The insects were apparently small.
