Poked Flat, 5000 ft. (cont'd.)
July 1st contd. Douglas Fir, Red Fir and White Fir. Found fresh mole working on bare area at edge of meadow. Set 1 mole trap there.
July 2nd In 25 sqr size mouse traps in the wet meadow, caught 3 Peromyscus maniculatus. In 18 mouse traps by logs in thick coniferous forest caught 6 Peromyscus maniculatus and 1 Clethrionomys mazama
About 9 A.M. left camp with Johnson and went up the ridge to the top of the meadow. The Del Norte-Siskiyou Co. line runs along the top of this ridge. Just as we were leaving Poked Flat, shot at & Ducky Jerna from the lower branches of a big Douglas Fir. On the way up the ridge saw several Hermit Thrushes in mixed small Douglas Fir and Saddle Oak. At an elevation of 5400 ft. we found several large trees Picea breweriana growing on the rocky ridge. The highest part of this ridge line is about 5600 ft.. From here we had a good view of the surrounding country. To the SE about 5 or 6 miles are several large peaks - among them Preston Peak. These are practically bare rock with a small fringe of timber on the lower
